Choosing a paint color is easier when you start with the room itself rather than the color chart. The way a space is lit, how large it is, and what already lives in it will shape how any color looks once it is on the wall.
Start with the light
Natural light changes through the day. North-facing rooms tend to read cooler, while south-facing rooms warm colors up. Look at samples in the morning, at midday, and in the evening before deciding.
Consider size and furniture
Lighter tones can help a small room feel more open, and deeper tones can make a large room feel more settled. Hold samples next to flooring, sofas, and cabinetry so the palette works with what stays.
Check the undertone
Most neutrals lean slightly warm or cool. Comparing a sample against plain white paper makes the undertone easier to see, and helps you avoid a clash with existing finishes.
